Shepherd’s Door is a shelter for homeless women and their children to rebuild their lives in a safe and secure environment. Not only does the shelter provide food and shelter, it offers the education, skills and resources for women to take care of their children on their own. Throughout a 12-18 month commitment, these women are given emotional support and are able to build their self-esteem through positive experiences and non-threatening guidance.

Since 2001, Don Rasmussen Company has proudly donated over $800,000 to help provide food, lodging, and recovery programs for these homeless women and children. With each new and pre-owned vehicle sale, we contribute a portion to the shelter, which provides the necessary funds for their daily operations. We are honored to be involved with Shepherd’s Door, as we can see they have not only changed the lives of the women and children who reside there, but they are breaking the generational cycle of abuse and poverty.

In addition to these much needed funds, we also have an employee reading program with the children. “Rasmussen Readers” sign up for a period of time to go to the shelter weekly and read to the children. These children thrive on the consistency of a friendly face, one that they know will not cause them any harm or sorrow. Nothing can make you feel better than knowing you have made a difference in a child’s life.
Helping children discover reading
Helping a child to enjoy reading is one of the most important things you can do for them and is well worth your efforts. Reading books aloud stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world around them. It also helps them develop their listening skills and build their vocabularies with words they understand and can use.

All children benefit from being read to, but these children will reap a larger benefit. When the Rasmussen Readers show up faithfully week after week, the children learn that not all adults break promises.
